Suggested Browsers help

The Linguist's Search Engine requires either Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla 1.5 or later or Firefox 0.8 or later or another Mozilla-based browser such as Netscape 7 or Camino. You will also need to install Java. Version 1.4.2 or newer is required - to check what version of Java you have, go to javatester.org.

Internet Explorer 5 and older (Mac or PC), Safari (Mac) and Opera (any platform) are not supported.

Note for Macintosh Users: By default only Java 1.3.1 is supported in Mozilla-based browsers on the Macintosh. To enable Java 1.4.2 in Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape and Camino you must download an updated Java plugin. Installation instructions:

  1. Download the most recent version from the SourceForge project page
  2. Quit Firefox, Safari and/or any other Web browser you have open.
  3. Unzip using StuffIt Expander or your favorite zip utility
  4. Move JavaEmbeddingPlugin.bundle and MRJPlugin.plugin from the Binaries folder in the unzipped archive to the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder on your hard disk.
  5. Open a terminal and run touch "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/MRJPlugin.plugin" - this updates the timestamp on the plugin so that it will be used for Java applets instead of Java Applet.plugin
  6. Finally restart your browser and go to JavaTester.org. You should see a pink box that reads "Java Version: 1.4.2_05 from Apple Computer, Inc."

See the included documentation for more information and for special instructions for using with Camino 0.7 (Camino 0.8 and later work with the regular installation instructions)
